Statuary, architecture, decorative arts, symbology and natural heritage, these are the main themes of our approach to Cemitério dos Prazeres, without forgetting the great personalities of history and culture that are buried there and the historical context in which they lived.
Opened in the middle of the 19th century, at the height of romantic aesthetics in Portugal, the cemetery of Prazeres, has a “primitive” nuclei of funerary monuments typical of that period, namely obelisks, urns and vases. Subsequently, there are “chapel deposits”, and examples of Art Nouveau and Deco architecture with different volumes, from simple to monumental, without forgetting the examples of the “soft Portuguese” of “houses” and “churches” with eaves. And then there is a whole symbology, coming from mythology, Christianity, Freemasonry, and the professional classes. The personalities that rest there allow an evocation of history since the Civil War, from Liberalism to the present day.
The route is entirely done on foot.
If you choose a full day, you can also visit the English cemetery and / or the German cemetery subject to their opening hours.
On the way between the cemeteries we can see the courtyards, the stained glass windows of the Church of Santo Condestável, the sky of the Church of Santa Isabel, interesting examples of urban rehabilitation, the typical cafes and have a true neighborhood experience.
